Solar Inserts...?

Is your Conservatory a Greenhouse?

Conservatories have enjoyed exceptional sales in recent years. Sold as “bringing the garden into your home” there is just one problem... you can’t use them because they get far too hot in summer accompanied by intolerable glare. In winter the problem is that of heat loss. The main culprit in both seasons is the roof and not the windows.

The best possible solution for reducing heat in a conservatory is to fit a roof window to let the heat escape and a purpose made ‘Conservatory Awning’ on top of the conservatory roof to keep the sunlight and solar heat out. Unfortunately, most conservatories sold in the UK are of the Georgian, Edwardian or Victorian type and do not lend themselves to be fitted with such awnings. Furthermore, awnings will not keep your conservatory warmer in winter.

Traditional internal blinds can be an attractive interior furnishing, providing shade. However, their effectiveness at reducing heat gain has consistently fallen short of expectations. By trapping a layer of hot air between the polycarbonate roof and the blind, interior blinds can often create a radiator in your roof. Moreover, fabric blinds collect dust and trap dead insects.

The Greenhouse Effect...

The major cause of excessive heat build up in a conservatory is the roof. Clear polycarbonate allows 80% of the sun’s solar energy to pass directly into your conservatory. As a result, the air temperature rises in the enclosed space making occupation uncomfortable. This effect is often referred to as ‘The Greenhouse Effect’.

The Solution...

Deal with the problem of solar heating before it enters the conservatory not after. Forget internal pleated roof blinds with special pearlescent or aluminium backing that some blind companies promise will do the job... they don’t. Unlike light, high levels of heat build-up cannot be reflected through the insulating airspaces in polycarbonate or glass quick enough for it to be cool. The solution is to fit the roof with a reflective solar insert which is inserted into the cavities of the polycarbonate to act as a solar shield, preventing the sun’s solar energy passing through the roof whilst allowing high levels of diffused natural light into the conservatory. The bright airy feel is maintained. UV light, the principle cause of fading, is virtually eliminated and glare is dramatically reduced.

Winter Heat Loss...

In winter, generated heat rises and slowly escapes through the roof. This wasted heat costs money to generate. Solar inserts reflect the heat back down into the conservatory below, making you more comfortable in winter.
